Approach to reading

At Benfield Primary School we offer a wide range of quality texts to meet the needs and interests of all our children. We aim to nurture a thirst for reading through providing a range of daily reading opportunities.

All of our early reading books are colour banded. Children choose their own reading books from the band which is the right reading level for them. These books include books from different genres and from a range of different series, including Oxford Reading Tree, Project X, Floppy Phonics, Rigby Star and Storyworld, as well as familiar and known authors.Children may also choose from our well-stocked and vibrant class reading corners. Children are encouraged to read as often as possible at home, and reading diaries are used to log home and school reading sessions.

All classes run ‘reading circles’ whereby children are grouped and share and discuss the same text. The main focus for guided reading is developing comprehension of texts and understanding text structure rather than simply decoding words, although this is an opportunity to reinforce and apply children’s decoding skills.

Children in key stage one experience a daily interactive and structured phonics session, based on the systematic ‘Letters and Sounds’ document.  This approach continues where needed in key stage two, and then develops into the teaching of spelling rules and patterns. Teachers use assessment to group and teach children according to their ability.
