How we teach writing at Benfield Primary School

A framework for ‘writing for purpose’ is in place across the whole school with an emphasis on children finding enjoyment in writing.

• Phonics is taught discretely, rigorously and differentiated from reception and throughout KS1, reinforced through reading and writing.

• Writing tasks are cross-curricular, meaningful and have a clear purpose and audience.

• Teachers create frequent opportunities for discussion, performance and reading aloud: oracy is at the heart of our English classroom practice for both reading and writing.

• We provide a language and vocabulary-rich environment for all of our children (key vocab on display and generated by the children)

• High quality core texts are carefully chosen for each topic to provide inspiration, excitement and maximise engagement with the writing process.
