Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE) 2023

The Department for Education (DfE) has published an updated version of the statutory safeguarding and child protection guidance for schools in England, Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE).1 This guidance replaced KCSIE 20222 when it came into force on 1 September 2023.

The guidance sets out what schools and colleges in England must do to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people under the age of 18.  The NSPCC issued an updated summary of these changes, which can be downloaded below.  The government's update contains key information relating to keeping our children safe in the increasing digital and online world.

A Plan for the Whole Family

Childnet say "A family agreement is a great way to start a conversation with your whole family about how you all use the internet, and to start discussions together around how to behave in a positive way when online, whether this is at home, at school or at a friend’s."

Download your family agreement to get the conversation going.

Trusted Adults

Our children learn who to turn to when they need support. Make sure your child knows who their 5 trusted adults are, by watching this video together.

Downs Digital Leaders

A team of Year 6 children have been recruited to continue the education of online safety in our school.  The team of Downs Digtial Leaders will be promoting online safety to all children in our school.  Their duties include:

  • Speaking in assemblies each half term.
  • Helping our classes use the internet for good.
  • Leading online safety themed games in PE.
  • Spreading kindness online, through Seesaw.
  • Promoting class challenges linked to online safety.
  • Presenting healthy digital habits.

Education - Internet Legends

Each half term, our children are taught about opportunities to stay safe online, using Google's program to teach online safety - Be Internet Legends.

"To make the most of the internet, children need to make smart decisions. Be Internet Legends empowers younger children to use the web safely and wisely, so they can be confident explorers of the online world."

We also teach our children to Zip, Block, Flag should any issues arise that make them feel uncertain.

Safer Internet Day

Here at Downs we celebrate Safer Internet Day each year.  We spend the day raising further awareness with our children, in assemblies and through dedicated activities, centred around the official theme each year.
